5/23/2023 0 Comments Book french braidYet, as these lives advance across decades, the Garretts' influences on one another ripple ineffably but unmistakably through each generation.įull of heartbreak and hilarity, French Braid is classic Anne Tyler: a stirring, uncannily insightful novel of tremendous warmth and humor that illuminates the kindnesses and cruelties of our daily lives, the impossibility of breaking free from those who love us, and how close-yet how unknowable-every family is to itself. Their youngest, David, is already intent on escaping his family's orbit, for reasons none of them understand. This familiar subject always seems fresh in her hands because Tyler draws her characters and their interactions in such specific and revealing detail. Their teenage daughters, steady Alice and boy-crazy Lily, could not have less in common. FRENCH BRAID by Anne Tyler RELEASE DATE: MaIn her 24th novel, Tyler once again unravels the tangled threads of family life. Mercy has trouble resisting the siren call of her aspirations to be a painter, which means less time keeping house for her husband, Robin. They hardly ever leave home, but in some ways they have never been farther apart. The Garretts take their first and last family vacation in the summer of 1959. “A quietly subversive novel, tackling fundamental assumptions about womanhood, motherhood and female aging.” -Jennifer Haigh, New York Times Book Review

The appeal of the cast names and the equally venerable scenic vistas should lure older audiences, though whether they’ll get out to theaters or wait for home-format delivery is an open question. Like that mildly amusing travel-memoir-cum-elongated-humor-column, there’s light diversion but little substance in this tale of two grumpy old men making a predictable hash of their effort to hike the Appalachian Trail. Robert Redford and Nick Nolte go for “ A Walk in the Woods” in Ken Kwapis’ broad, bland adaptation of Bill Bryson’s 1998 tome. 5/22/2023 0 Comments The longest day by wendy pfefferGORGEOUS illustrations! Either make terrible compromises in exchange for the possibility of freedom to someday pursue life objectives, or face constant downward economic pressure over decades. The threat of economic dislocation leaves Beaton (and just about everyone working in industries like the oil sands) with only bad options. Ducks is a coming-of-age story but the motivating driver behind the hero’s journey is the cold logic of capitalism. Though the book takes place in the mid-aughts, it documents tensions that define our current moment. What elevates Ducks beyond simple mastery of craft are the social overtones. It’s been just over 1800 pages since we first met Rin, only really a few years in book-time elapsed, and I honestly can’t tell you if there exists or could exist a more appropriate ending for the series than the one Rebecca Kuang gave us in The Burning God. This one is also very positive but with a series like this, enjoyment and happiness need to be considered as two different things. In case you missed my very positive reviews for the first two books, I’ll summarize by saying that they’re really good and you should go read them posthaste (the books, not the reviews). Well here we are at the end of The Poppy War trilogy.
