The best comparison I can devise is A Monster Calls, though that’s taking on a heavier subject. There are silly, humorous moments, but there are also really dark ones too. I mean, the first sentence is “Amanda was dead,” so this book isn’t going to be all fluffy magic times. It does, however, set the tone for The Imaginary really well. The introduction, as introductions often are, is a bit misleading. I’m so grateful that I tried The Imaginary, because it is this gorgeous, surprisingly creepy story about imaginary friends and growing up. However, all of the praise made me want to check out The Imaginary, so, when the time came, I requested it, crossing my fingers I wouldn’t regret my choice. Middle grade, as I keep saying, isn’t my jam most of the time. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Cardto be used when necessary to send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society’s regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society. Laws against homosexual behavior should remain on the books. With To Be a Man, this acclaimed psychotherapist and relationship expert offers a groundbreaking and deeply insightful guide to masculine power and fulfillment. Why am I not happier in my intimate relationships? I've got it all-a great job, relationship, and lifestyle-so why do I feel so dissatisfied and disconnected? 5/24/2023 0 Comments The wisdom of niccolo machiavelliNiccolò Machiavelli was born in Florence in 1469. Once we understand this basic requirement, we’ll be less disappointed and clearer about what we want our politicians to be. A good politician – in Machiavelli’s remarkable view – isn’t one who is kind, friendly and honest, it is someone – however occasionally dark and sly they might be – who knows how to defend, enrich and bring honour to the state. Machiavelli’s writings suggest that we should not be surprised if politicians lie and dissemble, but nor should we think them immoral and simply “bad” for doing so. Surprisingly, the very man who gave his name to the word “Machiavellian,” a word so often used to describe the worst political scheming, can help us understand the dangers of this tired dichotomy. We seem torn between our idealistic hopes and our pessimistic fears about the evil underbelly of politics. However, we are also regularly catapulted into cynicism when we realise the number of backroom deals and the extent of the lying that politicians go in for. On the one hand, we have an idealistic idea that a politician should be an upright hero, a man or woman who can breathe new moral life into the corrupt workings of the state. Our assessment of politicians is torn between hope and disappointment. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Fracture by Virginia McKevittIt took me a little longer to connect with Tegrin but once I opened myself up to accept the fantasy element, I enjoyed his story and his own quest. I enjoyed learning about the true identity of Kristina’s heritage and her quest for revenge after the death of her parents. It is then that he meets Kristina and they soon realise that their worlds are entwined beyond what they could have ever imagined. Tegrin, the lion-esque man is sent from Patwain to stop these women. This was original and unlike anything I had ever read before. I really liked the idea of The Couton- beautiful alluring women with the ability to steal memories. There is a fracture between the two, leaving both worlds vulnerable and accessible. The author cleverly combines the fantasy world of Patwain with earth. There was so much detail packed into the pages. It started off a little slow but I believe it was building up to the action half way through the book. It was my first fantasy novel, but I wanted to expand my reading base so I continued to read on and I am very pleased that I did. *I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review* I’ll admit when I started reading the very first chapter I wasn’t sure how much I would like this book.
